Tens Electrodes

When acquiring TENS units, you'll notice that they come equipped with electrodes or "pads" in product images and videos.

These electrodes are pivotal components, tailored to fit specific machines or cater to particular needs, such as larger surface areas for back pain or sensitive skin electrodes for more delicate skin.

What Are TENS Electrodes?

TENS Electrodes are self-adhesive pads utilised in conjunction with a TENS Machine to connect with the brain's pain center.

The number of pads varies among machines, with some employing one electrode and others using 2 or 4, depending on customer preference and treatment area.

Tips for Placing TENS Unit Electrodes

  1. Positioning: Place electrodes on either side of the affected area.
  2. Activation: Activate the unit following instructions.
  3. Distance: Position electrodes between half an inch to one and a half inches from the primary pain site for optimal results (this can be more preference of treatment).
  4. Removal: After a specific duration, carefully peel electrodes away from the skin. Avoid pulling the pads by the wire to prevent damage.

Changing TENS Unit Pads – When and How?

Replace pads when they no longer stick to the skin effectively, particularly if used frequently or under conditions where adhesive quality diminishes.

Before applying TENS electrodes, ensure the skin is clean and dry to maximise adhesion and longevity. Avoid getting the pads wet, as moisture compromises adhesive properties. Shaving areas with body hair before application can extend electrode usability.

TENS Electrode Placement Guidelines

While there isn't a definitive answer regarding electrode placement, various case studies suggest different placements are effective for different patients and symptoms.

Proper placement can lead to quick pain relief, with trial and error often necessary to find the most suitable positions for electrodes.

TENS Electrode FAQ’s

  1. What are TENS electrodes? TENS electrodes are adhesive pads or patches used in transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy to administer low-level electrical impulses for pain relief.
  2. How do TENS electrodes work? TENS electrodes transmit electrical impulses through the skin to stimulate nerves, interfering with pain signals and providing relief.
  3. How do I correctly apply TENS electrodes? Clean and dry the skin, then firmly press the electrode against the targeted area, ensuring secure adhesion.
  4. How long can TENS electrodes be worn? Typically, electrodes can be worn for 20 to 30 minutes to several hours per session, following manufacturer instructions and individual comfort levels.
  5. How often should I replace TENS electrodes? Replace electrodes after approximately 10 to 20 uses or when adhesive begins to degrade.
  6. Can TENS electrodes be reused? TENS electrodes are designed for single-patient use and should not be reused to maintain treatment effectiveness.
  7. Are there any risks or side effects associated with TENS electrodes? TENS therapy is generally safe but may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals. Consider sensitive skin electrodes if adverse reactions occur.
